Project Overview

When AI company digiLab wanted to showcase its work with the UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA), they approached Pulse Studio to create a case study film capable of turning an incredibly complex subject into an engaging and accessible story.

Having discovered Pulse online after viewing our previous work, digiLab needed a film that could explain how its probabilistic AI technology is helping UKAEA accelerate the development of fusion energy.

The challenge was to communicate advanced concepts around artificial intelligence, uncertainty and fusion engineering without losing the technical credibility required for an expert scientific audience.

The production took us from digiLab’s offices in Exeter to UKAEA’s fusion research facilities in Oxford, combining expert interviews, specialist environments and technology-focused footage into one concise story.

The Brief: Explaining AI & Fusion Energy

digiLab specialises in probabilistic machine learning, developing trustworthy and explainable AI to help organisations solve complex problems in highly regulated and safety-critical industries.

Its work with UKAEA applies that expertise to one of the world’s biggest scientific and engineering challenges: accelerating the realisation of fusion energy.

Our job was to turn that partnership into a clear two-minute case study.

Rather than simply explaining what the technology did, the film needed to establish the bigger story: why fusion matters, why AI has an important role to play and how the combination of digiLab’s AI expertise and UKAEA’s fusion expertise is helping researchers solve complex engineering problems.

The project included:

  • A two-minute hero case study film
  • Interviews with senior experts from digiLab and UKAEA
  • Filming across two locations
  • Footage inside UKAEA’s specialist research facilities
  • Technology and workplace footage
  • A 30-second social media edit
  • Content optimised for web, social media and events

The result needed to feel ambitious enough for the subject matter while remaining understandable to audiences without a background in AI or fusion science.

Turning Complex Science Into a Clear Story

One of the biggest challenges wasn’t filming the project. It was deciding what to leave out.

Fusion energy, probabilistic machine learning, uncertainty quantification and engineering simulation are enormous subjects in their own right.

Trying to explain everything would have resulted in a film that was technically comprehensive but difficult to follow.

Our pre-production process therefore focused heavily on identifying the central narrative and structuring the interviews around it.

The story moved from the potential of fusion energy, through the challenges facing scientists and engineers, to the role AI can play in speeding up simulations, understanding uncertainty and helping engineers make better-informed decisions.

It’s an approach we regularly use in our corporate video production projects: understand the subject in enough detail to identify what the audience actually needs to know, then build the film around that.

Filming Inside UKAEA

The production took place across digiLab’s Exeter office and UKAEA’s facilities in Oxford, giving us two very different visual environments. At digiLab, we captured the team at work alongside an interview with the company’s leadership, helping establish the AI expertise behind the partnership.

At UKAEA, we were given access to specialist environments including the MAST Control Room, JET Mock Up Lab and RACE facilities, alongside footage of the wider site. These environments allowed us to visually establish the scale and technical nature of the work without relying entirely on interviews or graphics.

Combining real scientific and engineering environments with footage of the people actually involved in the project helped ground an otherwise highly technical story in something much more tangible.

Putting the Experts at the Centre

Rather than relying on a scripted voiceover to explain the partnership, we built the film around the people directly involved. The production featured digiLab alongside senior UKAEA experts working across advanced computing, engineering, data science and visualisation.

Each interview was planned to perform a specific role within the story. digiLab could explain the company’s approach to trustworthy AI and why it had chosen to work within fusion, while UKAEA’s experts could establish the importance of fusion energy, explain the engineering challenges involved and provide an independent perspective on the value of the partnership.

Bringing those perspectives together gave the finished film both technical credibility and a clear human narrative.

Making Cutting-Edge Technology Visual

AI presents an interesting challenge for video production: much of the most important work isn’t inherently visual. The same is true of many of the simulations, data and engineering processes involved in fusion research.

We therefore combined interviews and location filming with technology footage, archive material, scientific imagery and carefully selected visual sequences to support the concepts being discussed.

Accuracy was particularly important. During post-production (video editing), imagery was reviewed by both digiLab and UKAEA to ensure that the visuals supporting the story accurately represented the science and technology being discussed.

Where imagery wasn’t considered technically appropriate, it was replaced with real footage supplied by the teams rather than using something simply because it looked impressive.

This allowed the film to retain its fast-paced, cinematic style without sacrificing the credibility required when communicating complex scientific subjects.

Creating Content for Multiple Platforms

The main film wasn’t designed for one isolated use. From the beginning, the production was planned around a two-minute hero film and shorter social content, giving digiLab different ways to tell the story across its marketing activity.

The completed content was created for use across digiLab’s website and social channels, UKAEA’s digital channels and a UKAEA showcase event. A dedicated 30-second social edit provided a shorter entry point into the story, directing audiences towards the full case study.

For organisations planning a similar campaign, our social media video production approach works in the same way — planning shorter assets alongside the main production rather than treating social content as an afterthought.

The Finished digiLab & UKAEA Film

Outcomes

The finished film brought together AI, fusion energy and advanced engineering into a concise case study built around the experts actually delivering the work.

Rather than attempting to simplify the technology to the point of losing its meaning, the film created a clear narrative that could introduce the partnership to a wider audience while retaining the technical credibility required by those working within the fusion sector.

The final content provided digiLab with a hero case study for its website, social media and wider marketing activity, alongside shorter content that could help extend the reach of the story.

Results

Following completion, the film was approved by UKAEA and prepared for publication across digiLab’s website and social channels.

digiLab’s marketing team told us they were “super happy” with the work and were keen to collaborate with Pulse Studio again.

The project also demonstrated the value of close collaboration during post-production. With multiple stakeholders and a highly technical subject, feedback could be incorporated quickly while ensuring the final film remained both engaging and scientifically appropriate.

Need to Explain a Complex Product, Technology or Idea?

Some of the most valuable products and projects are also the hardest to communicate.

Whether you’re working in AI, engineering, energy, healthcare, technology or scientific research, the challenge isn’t simply producing an impressive-looking video. It’s understanding the subject well enough to turn complex information into a story your audience will actually understand.

At Pulse Studio, we’ve spent more than 12 years producing exceptional corporate video production for organisations ranging from innovative technology businesses and research organisations to major international brands.

If you need to communicate a complex idea without losing the expertise behind it, get in touch with our team to discuss your project.
